Where it began

The project started with a specific problem: turn one reader's bookshelf into a tier ranking without losing the order inside each tier. A spreadsheet could hold the data, but it could not make the decisions feel clear. A simple list could show first place, but it could not show when two books belonged in the same class.

That tension became the central idea behind The Ranking Ledger: the structure of a ranking should match the question being asked.

What it is for

Use the Ledger for books, films, travel ideas, creative projects, purchases, team priorities, or any collection where “best” needs a little more explanation. Start from a prepared pool, import a list, or build one item at a time.

Guest work stays in the browser session. Signed-in accounts can keep private saved lists. The tool is designed to make ranking useful before it asks you to create an account.

The editorial principles

• Reasons beat reactions. A useful ranking can explain why one item moved above another.
• Different questions need different modes. Tiers show classes; ordered lists show exact priority; comparisons reveal close calls.
• Changing your mind is part of the work. A ranking is a record of judgment, not a claim of permanent truth.
• Your list should remain yours. Sources and images add context, but the decisions and commentary are the valuable part.
